Questions To Ask At First Ultrasound: What You Need To Know

Your first ultrasound during pregnancy is going to be one of the most exciting doctor’s appointments you will ever have. At your first ultrasound, you’ll get to see what your baby looks like for the first time!

However, it can be a little overwhelming. You might be thinking, “What questions should I ask?” “What do I need to know about my pregnancy or my baby?” This article will help you go to your first ultrasound with confidence.

What Is An Ultrasound, Exactly?

Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body, including internal organs and developing fetuses. It’s safe to use during pregnancy because it does not use any radiation. Ultrasound poses no risk to the mother or baby, which is why it’s become standard.

Your First Ultrasound: The Process

Depending on what type of ultrasound you get at your first appointment, the process will be different. You might get a transvaginal ultrasound or transabdominal ultrasound.

A transvaginal ultrasound (also called an internal ultrasound) is done by inserting a probe inside the vagina. It may produce minor discomfort when moved, however it is not painful. Transvaginal ultrasounds are not always required and patients may opt not to have them. These types of ultrasounds tend to be done earlier in pregnancy, or in situations where the doctor or technician needs to inspect the cervical opening for obstructions. The benefit of this type of ultrasound is that it tends to produce a clearer picture of the baby.

A transabdominal ultrasound is the more common type of ultrasound, where the transducer is moved along the abdomen. It’s typically done after 11 or 12 weeks of pregnancy. There is little discomfort, however the gel used on the abdomen is cool to the touch and the transducer may produce a tickling sensation.

There’s no prep required for your first ultrasound, but we do recommend that you are well hydrated when you come in.

Questions To Ask During First Ultrasound

Your first prenatal visit is one of the most important appointments you’ll have, because that’s when the doctor will determine whether or not your baby is developing normally. Here are some questions you should ask during your first ultrasound:

What can you tell me about my baby?

The doctor will not be able to tell you the sex of the baby, but they will be able to tell you about certain deformities or congenital conditions.

What screenings and tests will I need?

Depending on what is seen in the first ultrasound, your doctor may recommend you for additional screenings.

What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Some medications may cause problems during pregnancy: make sure to let your doctor know what you’re taking.

What pregnancy symptoms are normal to expect?

At this point, you’ve likely experienced some early symptoms such as morning sickness and fatigue. Use this time to explain your symptoms to your doctor.
